Thankfully, lots of software I use is also simply freeware or magware. I love freedom and freedom is to carry all your software with you on a stick with all the registrations and serials. As soon as I see "dongle protected" I just ignore. Personally, I don't find one piece of software that uses a dongle for protection any superior to even some freeware plugins. Fuck those who use dongles for protection of their software. People should support developers who don't use any dongles and especially who use friendly protections.

I would feel like someone handcuffed me and said "now play the piano". Also, it is way too much hassle in every way, I would feel like I'm being punished for using a dongle. This is just one of the reasons I would never use a dongle.

He told me straight up, he can't figure out how to get file permissions working in Win 8 - no one can! If there's a problem on Win 8, that's the very first place to be looking, but the catch is you may not be able to figure out how to do what it is you're trying to do.

This guy has awesome programming chops, very bright guy. If you're not familiar with it, it's a small encryption utility that's very well done, and fairly popular. 99% of the time if something isn't working properly in Win 8 it's because you don't have proper permissions set up to do what you want to do.įunny story - I had a series of emails recently with a guy who wrote some software called "Axcrypt". You'll also find that in the right-click properties tab in the form of a check-box - it's worth looking at just to make sure all permissions are opened up. Also, another thing I'm frequently noticing in Win 8 is that there's an auto function of some sort that sets files downloaded from the web to automatically be unable to write or modify anything. I've done a routine similar to that on 100 different files in Win 8 and it's gotten some of them finally doing what I want them to do.

dll files you find under soundtoys and open them up fully for security permissions (under the security tab in properties). Perhaps between those 2 programs you may find an answer to your SoundToys dilemma.Ī good starting point (and one that doesn't take up much time) is to run that 'take ownership' utility on your soundtoys folder, then go to the properties tab for whatever. It helps open up a good many locked registry entries in Win 8 that can't otherwise be deleted or modified. You might also try a program called 'Registrar Registry Manager V. You can be the administrator and single user of a computer, and still not be allowed to modify files! It's mind-boggling.Īnyway, I make no promises but you can find that 'take ownership' utility here. That's generally where the problem is on Win 8 - they have all this security crap that makes it extremely difficult to do things that are fairly commonplace. bat file that changes permissions so that you can adjust files letting them be fully accessed and modified. It leaves an entry in the right-click explorer menu where it will allow you to auto-run a. You might google for a little utility called "Take Ownership", I've found it helpful. There are two versions of iLok USB keys, the original iLok USB Smart key, and the new 2nd Generation USB iLok, both of them are compatible and will work perfectly well. The new 2nd Generation USB iLok holds up to 500 authorizations.I'm finding more and more that you can get alot of stuff working on Win 8, but admittedly it's a struggle.
